UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE IN COLUMBUS

Most engagement locations in Central Ohio give you one thing: a beautiful backdrop. A garden. A park.

Alum Creek Beach gives you a feeling.

There is joy about open water and open sky that changes people. The moment my couples step onto the sand, their energy shifts. The shoulders drop. The laughter comes easier and louder and more genuine than it does anywhere else. Alum Creek has wide stretches of soft sand, beautiful views of the water,  And that looseness, and joy shows in every single frame.

This is not the location for couples who want formal and stiff photos. This is the location for couples who are genuinely in love and want photos that look exactly like them. Playful. energetic. Full of life. The kind of gallery that makes everyone who sees it say, you two look so happy. Because you were.

THE LOCATION: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Alum Creek State Park is located in Delaware County, 3400 Lewis Center Rd, Lewis Center, OH 43035. just southeast of Delaware, Ohio, off U.S. Route 23, only about 25 minutes north of downtown Columbus. The park covers over 4,630 acres of scenic beauty, with the beach sitting along the western shore of the lake.

The beach area includes a changing area and concession stand, and is open from sunrise to sunset. Parking is straightforward, the beach is wide enough to always find a quiet stretch even on busier days, and the variety of settings within a short walk of the shoreline means a single session here can move through multiple distinct environments.

The sand stretches long in both directions from the main beach area. The water is calm enough for wading but vast enough to feel genuinely expansive in a photograph. The horizon line sits clean and wide. And on the right evening, the open skies light up perfectly at sunset, turning the whole scene into something that needs absolutely nothing added to it.

WHAT MAKES ALUM CREEK

EXTRAORDINARY FOR PHOTOGRAPHY ?

Here is what I have learned from shooting at Alum Creek Beach: it gives you everything, all in one place.

The shoreline :

The simplest and most powerful setting. Two people walking the waterline, the lake beside them, the sky above them, it is one of the most naturally elegant compositions available to a photographer anywhere. The leading line of the shoreline draws the eye, the water reflects the light, and couples moving along it look effortlessly alive.

The shallow water :

This is where the joy lives. I always encourage couples to take off their shoes and step in to splash a little. The reactions are always genuine and always extraordinary. Couples willing to get into the water for candid moments and fun poses create photos that feel completely alive and unrepeatable.

The grassy dunes and tree line :

If the beach is busy, moving toward the grassy dunes or nearby trees offers a little variety, and it always photographs beautifully no matter the season. This transition from wide open beach to the intimacy of the tree line gives the gallery natural contrast and visual variety without going anywhere.

The open sky :

Open skies that light up perfectly at sunset are the defining feature of this location during golden hour. When the light drops below the horizon and spreads across the water and the sand, there is a warmth and luminosity in the air that no reflector or studio light could ever replicate. This is the window I always chase.

The birds and wildlife :

This one surprises couples every time. Alum Creek is home to abundant bird life herons, egrets, swallows, and the resident lake birds that are always present along the shoreline. When you spot birds along the beach, asking couples to walk toward them creates extraordinary images where the birds take flight around them, unexpected, alive, and completely unique to this location.

MY STYLE AND WHAT I BRING TO YOUR ALUM CREEK SESSION

I need to tell you something about how I work, because it explains why the photos from a session with me look different from what you might have seen elsewhere.

I do not direct you into poses and ask you to hold still. I create experiences. I capture your emotions. The result is a gallery that does not look like a photoshoot at all. It looks like a beautiful afternoon between two people who are completely in love. That is my style. And Alum Creek Beach is one of the few places in Central Ohio where that style has complete freedom to breathe.

THE BEST SEASON FOR ALUM CREEK BEACH ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS

Every season at Alum Creek offers something genuinely different and beautiful. Here is what each one gives your gallery:

Late Spring (May to early June)

brings the freshest light of the year. The lake is calm, the crowds are still building, and the green of the surrounding trees is at its most vivid. Golden hour sessions in May are long and generous, the light stays warm and low for nearly an hour. This is the season for couples who want color, freshness, and the feeling of everything beginning.

Summer (June through August)

is when the beach is most alive. The water is warm enough to genuinely play in. The colors are rich and saturated. The blue of the sky against the blue of the water creates a backdrop that photographs with the depth and quality of a coastal session. Late August and early September are particularly beautiful, the light gets a little warmer and the beach feels calm again after summer rushes by.

Early Fall (September and October)

is my personal favorite. The crowds thin out, the light gets softer and more golden, and the tree line behind the beach begins turning amber at the edges. Golden hour in October at Alum Creek is something I genuinely look forward to every year. The warmth of the light, the stillness of the water, and the quiet that returns to the beach after summer, it produces something painterly and completely unhurried.

Winter

is underrated and honestly spectacular in a completely different way. The beach is empty. The lake is vast and still. The sky is often soft and grey in a way that creates a clean, minimalist backdrop that makes couples look extraordinary against it. If you are drawn to something dramatic and spare rather than warm and golden, winter at Alum Creek will surprise you.

MY TIPS FOR THE BEST ALUM CREEK BEACH ENGAGEMENT SESSION

These are the things I have learned from shooting here that nobody else is writing down, and they make the difference between beautiful photos and photos that genuinely stop people.

Come at golden hour, always. The difference between afternoon light and golden hour light at Alum Creek is extraordinary. Afternoon sun is flat and harsh. Golden hour turns the water into a mirror and the sand into something warm and alive. I schedule every beach session to arrive 60 to 90 minutes before sunset and work through the last of the light.

Go on a weekday. The beach can get genuinely busy on summer weekends. Visiting during a weekday evening gives you quieter scenes and the best golden hour light, and it means we have stretches of shoreline entirely to ourselves, which changes the intimacy of the images completely.

Bring something to change into. The beach is a physical environment. Shoes come off. Sometimes you step into the water. The most extraordinary sessions I have photographed here involved a wardrobe shift partway through, one elevated, flowing look for the open shoreline portraits, and one more relaxed, natural look for the water moments. I help every couple think through this in advance.

Wear the right colors. For Alum Creek specifically, I recommend soft neutrals, warm earth tones, and flowing fabrics that move with the breeze and photograph beautifully against the water. White and cream look extraordinary here. Avoid bold graphic prints that compete with the natural environment. I send every couple a complete, personalized style guide before we begin.

Be prepared to get a little sandy. The best moments at this location happen when couples stop worrying about staying clean and start actually being present. Sand between the toes. Feet in the water. Sitting together on the beach as the light turns gold around you. The photos from those moments are always the ones couples print.

Watch the wildlife. Alum Creek is full of birds and natural movement that adds extraordinary life to photographs when you know to look for it. I always watch for the right moment and use what the environment offers. Some of the most memorable frames from beach sessions come completely unexpectedly, a heron landing nearby, a swallow cutting through the frame, the birds lifting off the water just as the couple moves toward them.

No. Ohio does not charge entrance fees to state parks. The beach itself is free to access during daylight hours.

What are the beach hours?

The beach is open from sunrise to sunset. I schedule sessions to start about 90 minutes before sunset and work through golden hour.

Is the water clean enough to step into?

Yes, Alum Creek is a well-maintained state park with monitored water quality. Stepping into the shallows is completely safe and is genuinely one of the best decisions you can make for your session. The photos from water moments are consistently among the most joyful in any gallery.

What should we wear?

Soft, flowing fabrics in warm neutrals, cream, white, sage, or earthy tones work beautifully against the water and sand. Bring comfortable shoes you can remove easily and an outfit you do not mind getting slightly sandy. Most Alum Creek sessions run 120 minutes to two hours, enough time to work through the full shoreline, the water moments, the dunes, and the golden hour finale without ever feeling rushed.

Do you help us choose outfit colors that match for our engagement session?

Absolutely. Part of my process is helping couples select outfit colors that complement each other naturally while also matching the vibe and location of their session. ABOUT ME & SASSI PHOTO

Nobody Told You Ohio Had a Beach Like This

I am Ahmed,

the photographer and creative director behind Sassi Photo. For nearly a decade, I have been capturing engaged and married couples across Columbus, Central Ohio, and beyond, turning love stories into artistic galleries worth treasuring for a lifetime.

My work is built on one belief: photography should feel like an experience, not a performance. Every session I photograph is an invitation to slow down, be present with each other, and let something genuine and beautiful unfold. I bring the direction, the artistic eye, the preparation, and the patience, and I ask you to bring nothing except yourselves and your willingness to feel something.

The couples I work with are not looking for basic photos. They are looking for elegant and artistic photos that carries the joy, and the full feeling of this exact season of their lives, and holds it in a gallery they will return to forever. If that sounds like what you have been looking for, I would love to hear your story.
