WHY FRANKLIN PARK IS ONE OF COLUMBUS'S MOST ELEGANT ENGAGEMENT LOCATIONS
Most people drive past Franklin Park on East Broad Street every day and never truly see it. Franklin Park is an 88-acre park that has been in operation since 1851. Before becoming a City of Columbus park, it previously served as the official venue for both the Franklin County Fair in 1852 and the Ohio State Fair from 1874 to 1884. That history lives in the park's bones, in the maturity of its trees, the depth of its gardens, the quiet permanence of everything it holds.
This is not a new park trying to look beautiful. It is a park that has been growing beautiful for over 170 years. The trees are old enough to arch overhead and filter light in ways that no younger landscape can replicate. The garden sections have a layered richness that takes decades to develop. And the whole place carries that quality of places that have held human joy for a very long time, a warmth, a settledness, a feeling that good things have happened here before and will happen here again.
Couples feel it the moment they arrive. Something shifts. They slow down. They look at each other. And that shift shows in every single frame I capture.
THE BEST SPOTS WITHIN FRANKLIN PARK FOR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS
The roadway path around the outer edge of the park is 1.1 miles and within that loop, there are more distinct portrait environments than most engagement locations in Columbus offer in their entirety. Here is how I move my couples through the park and what each section gives the gallery:
The Cherry Blossom Trees :
This is where the most breathtaking spring sessions happen. The backdrop of Franklin Park Conservatory features flowering cherry trees that are free and open to the public. The Cherry Blossom Festival in Franklin Park celebrates the beauty of over 100 blooming cherry trees, modeled after the famous festival in Washington D.C. When those trees are in bloom — typically late March into early April — the park becomes something so extraordinary that couples come specifically for this window. Pink blossoms overhead, petals drifting across the path, the whole garden turned soft and luminous. It photographs like nothing else in Ohio.
The Cascades :
The Cascades area is stunning in every season. The Cascades run along Franklin Park South and a small portion of Franklin Park West streets, a beautiful stepped waterfall feature surrounded by mature trees and garden beds. The sound of running water, the architectural quality of the stone, and the way light plays across the water surface at different times of day give portraits taken here a richness and movement that still-garden backgrounds simply cannot provide. This is consistently one of my favorite portrait spots in the entire park and one that most photographers do not even know exists.
The Scotts Miracle-Gro Community Garden Campus :
The Community Garden Campus is completely free and open to the public daily. Four acres of cultivated beauty, rose pavilions, flowering walkways, berry gardens, ornamental archways, and the kind of lush structured greenery that makes every couple look like they stepped into an editorial spread. The trellis entryway alone is one of the most naturally elegant portrait frames available anywhere in Central Ohio. At golden hour, the light through the overhead structure turns warm and directional in a way that no reflector could replicate.
The Hidden Bridge :
Many people visit Franklin Park many times before actually discovering this bridge, it is a beautiful spot, especially when the cherry trees are blossoming. This is exactly the kind of location that rewards a photographer who knows the park intimately. Tucked slightly off the main paths, the bridge over a small creek offers one of the most quietly romantic portrait compositions in the entire park. Couples standing on that bridge with blooming trees behind them and water moving below, it produces frames that feel completely private and completely timeless.
The Outdoor Amphitheater :
There is a great outdoor amphitheater within the park, and even if nothing is going on at the time, it is a beautiful place to take a rest and enjoy the scenery. For photography, the stone steps and architectural lines of the amphitheater create some of the most dramatically interesting compositions in the park, wide, bold, and completely unexpected from what is otherwise a garden setting.
The Pedestrian Paths and Garden Beds :
The surrounding area around Franklin Park Conservatory includes paved walking trails, garden beds, open green spaces, picnic areas, and shaded rest areas. Sometimes the simplest settings produce the most powerful photos. Couples walking a tree-lined path at golden hour, completely at ease with each other, the garden soft and rich behind them, these are the frames that always end up on walls.

Every season at Franklin Park is genuinely beautiful and distinctly different. Here is what each one offers your gallery:
Spring, the crown jewel :
More than 140,000 tulips, daffodils, and pansies throughout the gardens and container displays combine with magnolias, lilacs, cherries, viburnum, and thousands of perennials, with plants blooming throughout the season starting in March and continuing through the following months. The cherry blossoms specifically bloom late March into early April, a window of seven to fourteen days when the park becomes genuinely otherworldly. If you have any flexibility in your timing, spring at Franklin Park is the most extraordinary version of itself. Book early. These dates go fast.
Summer, lush, rich, and golden :
The gardens are at their fullest. The Community Garden Campus is a riot of color and texture. The tree canopies are complete and the light filtering through them is soft and dappled in a way that photographs with extraordinary depth. Golden hour sessions in June and July at Franklin Park produce some of the warmest, most luminous galleries I create all year.
Fall, dramatic and painterly :
The trees surrounding the Cascades and the garden paths turn amber and gold, and the whole park takes on a richness and warmth that spring and summer cannot match. October at Franklin Park is a completely different experience from any other season, and the portraits from fall sessions here have a timeless, almost painted quality that I genuinely love creating.
Winter, spare, elegant, and completely underrated :
The bare trees against soft grey winter light create a minimalist backdrop that makes couples look extraordinary. The Cascades in winter, with frost on the stone and the water still running, photographs with a drama and stillness that is genuinely unlike anything from the warmer months. For couples drawn to something elegant and spare rather than lush and colorful, winter at Franklin Park will surprise you completely.
MY TIPS FOR THE BEST RESULTS AT FRANKLIN PARK
These are the details I have learned from shooting here that nobody else is writing about, and they make the difference between beautiful photos and photos that genuinely stop people.
Come at golden hour, every time :
The difference between midday light and golden hour light in this park is not subtle, it is transformative. The garden walls catch the warmth and hold it. The cherry trees glow from within. The Cascades turn amber. The whole park becomes a completely different place. I schedule every Franklin Park session to arrive 60 to 90 minutes before sunset and work through the last of the light without rushing.
Visit on a weekday :
Franklin Park has free parking lots for visitors, but they fill up quickly. On a weekday evening, the park is noticeably quieter, particularly the Community Garden Campus and the area around the Cascades. That quietness translates directly into more intimate, more private, more genuinely relaxed images.
Cherry blossom sessions require advance planning :
The bloom window is beautiful and brief, typically seven to fourteen days in late March and early April. Cherry blossoms typically bloom at the end of March into early April and can last for anywhere from seven to ten days and up to two weeks. If a cherry blossom session is part of your vision, reach out well in advance and we will plan around the bloom timing together.
Dress for the garden's palette :
Franklin Park's color story is warm and botanical, aged brick, deep green, amber wood, soft stone, and the blush and white of the cherry blossoms in spring. Bring an outfit change :
The park's two distinct environments, the structured Community Garden and the more open, organic Cascades and path areas, suit slightly different looks. One elevated, flowing outfit for the garden sections and one softer, more relaxed look for the open park areas gives the gallery natural variety that makes it feel like two completely different sessions in one.
Notice the details :
Franklin Park is full of small, beautiful things that most people walk past a single rose in full bloom, an archway covered in climbing vines, the reflection of cherry blossoms in a puddle after rain. I always watch for these moments and incorporate them into the session. Some of the most memorable frames from any Franklin Park gallery come from details nobody planned.
